Surface Shotfirer - Cert II & III Units Short Course Part A towards the the NSW BEUL Licence

This course is specifically designed for individuals within the Mining, Drilling, and Civil Infrastructure sector who are involved in open cut/ above ground /quarry operations and require the Nationally Recognised Training units to apply for Shotfirer Licences in Australia. 

This course provides the 4 Cert II & III Units towards the NSW Surface Blasting Explosives User License (BEUL) requirements. In addition to these 4 units BEUL applicatants must also complete the BMI Advance Shotfirer Short Course Part B to the BEUL training.

RIIBLA205E – Store, Handle and Transport Explosives
RIIBLA301E – Conduct Surface Shotfiring Operations
RIIBLA305E – Conduct Secondary Blasting

To obtain a Statement of Attainment, candidates undertake a blended learning program covering three components:

  1. Theory: Classroom: 4-day session available in private or public venue programs
  2. Operational Work Site Engagement & Experience Evidence Submission
  3. Onsite Observational and Oral Assessment: Conducted by BMI Trainers / Assessor in partnership with site to evaluate practical & theory application skills.

Entry Requirements:

All applicants to be supported by their site Drill and Blast Superintendent/Supervisor and Shotfirer.

Sites to complete a Training Program Agreement. 

Applicant to be:

  • Currently employment on a Drill and Blast team for a minimum of 4 months.
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Possession of a Security Clearance Card (previously called an unsupervised handling licence (UHL)
  • Ability to provide evidence of participation in shotfiring teams and blasts
    Basic understanding of mining operations and explosives obtained through a site induction
  • Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, and comprehension)
  • Calculates measurements, products and ratios
  • Basic computer literacy

Equipment Requirements:

  • Computer or iPad with a camera and an internet connection
  • Mobile phone (IOS or Android) running the SiteDocs APP
  • Trainees will be required to utilise mobile devices to collect workplace evidence onsite. Prior authorisation is necessary to capture photos as supporting evidence
  • Email Address
  • USI for Australian Residents

  • Access to a Category 2 Vehicle and a Magazine to conduct Audits. 

Course Duration: Total 135 hours (nominal)

Candidates will be expected to complete the Course within 18 months from commencement.

 

Refresher Course for personnel wishing to update their current RIIBLA qualification, including licence renewal:

Designed for existing competent shotfirers to refresh their competency. Requirements include a theory component and submission of evidence demonstrating shotfirer activity, risk assessments, and auditing activity over the past 12 months. Entry into the refresher course necessitates evidence of an existing Statement of Attainment and VET Transcript.
