This short course with National Recognised Training units is aimed at those new to the drill and blast industry working under the supervision of a Licensed Shotfirer. These units are also required for some statutory positions such as Open Cut Examiner (OCE).

Course Description

This comprehensive course equips individuals with the essential skills and knowledge vital for safely supporting shot firing operations and effectively managing explosives within the Mining, Drill, and Civil Infrastructure sector. 

Geared towards operational roles and those working under shotfirer supervision, participants will learn various aspects, including handling, storing, transporting explosives, checking blast operations, priming, loading, and firing explosives. Additionally, this course may cover maintaining stock records and overseeing explosives storage.

Course Components and Requirements for Statement of Attainment:

To successfully obtain a Statement of Attainment, trainees must complete three components:

  1. Theory: Offered in two delivery methods:
    – Classroom-based: 2-day sessions available in private programs.
    –  Online training: Self-paced web-based modules accessible for partnered sites with BMI mentorship.

  2. Operational Engagement and Experience Evidence Submission: Trainees must provide evidence of practical engagement and experiences.

  3. Onsite Observational Assessment: Conducted by BMI Trainers and/or Site Appointed personnel to evaluate practical application skills.

Entry Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Possession of a Security Clearance card or equivalent
  • Active involvement with a Drill and Blast team
  • Basic understanding of mining operations
  • Familiarity with explosives products and applications, typically acquired through a site induction
  • Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, and comprehension)
  • Fundamental mathematics knowledge, encompassing basic area and volume calculations, percentages, and equation transposition
  • Basic computer literacy

Equipment Requirements:

  • Computer or iPad with camera and internet connection
  • Mobile phone (IOS or Android) running the SiteDocs APP. Trainees will be required to utilise mobile devices to collect workplace evidence onsite.  Prior authorisation is necessary to capture photos as supporting evidence.  
  • Active email address
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI) for Australian Residents
  • Access to a Category 2 Vehicle and a Magazine to conduct an Audit. 

Course Duration: Total 50 hours (nominal)

Candidates will be expected to complete the Course within 12 months from commencement.

Refresher Course for Existing Competent Blast Crew:

Designed for existing competent blast crew members to refresh their competency. Requirements include a theory component and submission of evidence demonstrating blast crew activity, risk assessments, and auditing activity over the past 12 months. Entry into the refresher course necessitates evidence of an existing Statement of Attainment and VET Transcript.
